We often get asked what kind of fruit trees we carry. Here is a list.

We have many types of Fruit in Stock and on order.

We strive to have a wide variety of options and are interested in what you would like to see us get. Right now our current stock of fruit and nut trees have been grown in NM. They are hardened off to our climate and are selected for growth here. We order regularly through the growing season and do expect to have a few more varities in. Please call or email to current availability, if possible we do accept pre-orders but do not currently do online ordering.

Poinsettia Care & Facts

POINSETTIAS

Light requirements 6 hrs bright indirect light
Soil: Well drained regular potting mix
Water: As needed, let top dry out slightly
Drainage: Does not like to sit in water, make sure and dump excess water from saucer or foil after watering
Temperatures: At Christmas time: keep inside and away from drafts or heater vents.
Spring to fall: it can tolerate between 40-100 degrees.
Pests: They can be vulnerable to certain pests in particular whitefly. Monitor closely and consider using a systemic insecticide for prevention.
Fertilizer: A good well balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 is good.

Facts about Poinsettias

Native to Mexico grows well outdoors in zone 9-10
Its native Aztec name is Cuetlaxochitl (pronounced kwet-la-sho-she)
Blooms are small and yellow, what we see are colored leaves
In the spurge family, has a white latex sap that comes out when leaves are damaged or stem is broken
They are toxic but not poisonous to animals and humans. Their sap can be irritating and cause red marks but isn’t fatal. Link to poison control article.
Many colors have been developed, from red, white, yellow, peach, pink and speckled variations of those.

Year round care:

You don’t have to throw them out after Christmas, they can live in your houses and will enjoy your porch over the spring summer and fall. .
Repot after Christmas : Putting into a slightly larger pot after Christmas can help give them the nutrients to grow o the next size. Any regular potting mix will work, stems may break easily so wear gloves if you are concerned about sap irritating your skin. If a limb breaks off the plant won’t die.
Pinching. Pinching out the growth tip will encourage more branching and result in a more compact plant.
Water regularly throughout the summer and fall.
October: Start putting in a dark room or closet at night for 12-14 hours to get bracts to turn color before the holidays. Make sure it is complete darkness not even a nightlight.

Tips

Leaves can curl and dry up, don’t panic! They tend to lose a few leaves as they are moved. It’s normal even for the growers.

The branches are a bit fragile and sometimes you notice a whole stem wilted, most likely it was broken during transportation, simply snap that limb off and discard. It doesn’t mean your whole plant is dying.

The branches will live in water like a cut flower as well if it is still in good condition, enjoy it in a vase.

Consider a Princietta variety they have smaller leaves but are a much hardier version of the poinsettia and seem to have less insect and other problems.

Local Pecans: Where to buy and what kind to purchase

Sun Country Homes and Gardens are pleased to sell Pecans grown in our area. We have harvested the pecans off our trees at the store as well as pecans from a family members small orchard.

We have partnered with Matas Pecans in Roswell to shell and bag them for us and have them available at our retail location 2707 S. 1 ^st in Artesia, NM

We noticed a need because many people were asking us where to buy pecans from the orchards that surround us. Chase Pecans supplies commercial entities and perhaps we can partner with them in the future if our sales demand a bigger source

Growing your own pecans at home

We also sell young pecan trees grown in New Mexico from a respected grower in the Las Cruces area. Pecans have a large tap root and growing them in containers is a bit more challenging than some trees. This stock not only transplants well, it is already acclimated to SE New Mexico’s environment. We sell the following cultivars.

Western Schley Pecan Tree

Excellent pecan tree growing 40 ft tall and wide, widely grown in Southern NM. Considered the King among Pecans to one of the world's largest pecan growers, Stahmann farms in Las Cruces. Burkett is a good pollinator for this variety as well as Pawnee and Wichita, although they are self fruiting. Famous for their tasty meat and thin shell, they are a great variety of home as well as commercial pecan production. One of the three main trees that are grown in the Pecos Valley and Mesilla Valley

Bradley Pecan “Queen of the Pecans”

Bradley pecans are well known for their high oil content and excellent flavor, which makes them very popular, and highly sought after pecans for gourmet goods and specialty foods. They are consistent bearers producing the same size crop each year. They are good pollinators for Western Schley. One of the three main trees that are grown in the Pecos Valley and Mesilla Valley

Burkett Pecans

One of the most common varieties grown. Produces a large, tasty nut. Plant with another pecan variety for best production. Famous for it’s high quality nut and paper thin shell it was found and cultivated by the Burkett Family in Callahan County Texas in the early 1900’s.

Pawnee Pecans

Are an excellent choice for small gardens and are more compact than many pecan varieties, only growing about 30 ft tall and wide. It is an excellent pollinator for other pecans and ripens earlier than other pecans and has a paper thin shell. The sweet pecan meat makes it a popular variety for home and commercial pecan production.

Wichita Pecan Trees

Fast growing pecan trees that are a popular variety in the Southwest. Bred at the Pecan Field Station in Brownfield, TX. Good for commercial and home production, they serve as a good pollinator variety. Early bloom and disease resistance is a good trade off for the somewhat slower growth.

Which Pecan is right for me?

Consider how much room you have to grow the pecan tree. Pay attention to overhead power lines and fence lines to see what suits your space. For instance sometimes people plant a small tree (today) under power lines only to have the power company top the tree when it encroaches too close to the lines. This is not a good growing pattern for pecan trees. Also consider the width to of the tree, will it get to close to a fence or building that will cause issues. It is also important to consider water and sewer lines in where to place a tree. Keeping them at least 6-10 ft away from main lines.

Do you need more than one tree to get nuts?

No, however more trees does increase pollination and production.

How do I get the best yield?

Regular Fertilization and water are key. Watering deeply less often is preferable to a little water every day. Commercial growers in our area flood irrigate which is a lot of water at once and then not for a long time. The goal is deep watering over just a few inches of water at the roots. We carry a specialized Pecan Fertilizer that contains additional nutrients that Pecans use for a bigger yield.

Ocotillo Planting and Care

General Information

Fouquieria splendens also called Ocotillo (Oh-co-tea-oh) is native across the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts crossing into the Baja of California. Attractive to many native insects and birds who both visit the flowers and eat the seeds. This staple of many native landscapes in New Mexico and Arizona. While it is an easy care plant, it perplexes many gardeners because it is dormant most of the year. In Tucson it is common to see the stalks used for fence posts where the spines provide a natural barrier and some of the stalks take root and grow. It has many ethnobotanical uses and makes a great addition to the landscape. Typically in nature it is seen on hillsides where drainage is good and they plant is shaded part of the day. Large specimens that are field dug, should be oriented to the same direction as it was in the wild. (Please not permits are generally required to dig this plant from the wild, please check local regulations.)

Size : Height: 15-20 ft Width: 10-15 ft

Flower Season : Leafless most of the year, they tend to leaf out after rains most often blooming in late spring early summer. Transplanted ocotillos may take two years to flower.

Cold Hardiness : Zone 7 (10 deg F)

Watering requirements : For new plants once a week during warm months and twice a month in winter for the first two years. Misting the stems with water can be an efficient way to water especially during droughts. They may take a couple of years to show new growth and to establish fully. Don’t give up hope too soon if you think it is dead. They go through dormant periods and drop all leaves at any time of year. It is part of their survival mechanism in the desert. Most established ocotillos do not require any supplemental water during the cooler months and certainly no more than every second to fourth week during the hottest of summers.

Soil Prep :Ocotillos do not need rich soil and would like well draining sandy soil best. Dig your planting hole about twice the size of the container or root ball, but only as deep as the root ball. Water the empty planting hole until full, water should drain in an hour. If it does not drain well, sand is needed to provide adequate drainage. While they can be kept in containers, most are going to do best planted in the ground. If kept in a container mimic natural soil conditions with sand and desert soil. Peat or coco based potting mixes are not recommended. They should not be staked; instead place a heavy rock nearby to keep from blowing down.

Fertilizing : As a rule, they do not require fertilizer. You can apply a mild slow acting fertilizer like root stimulator, fish emulsion or a cactus fertilizer once a year. Root stimulator applied at time of planting can be helpful.

Sun: Sunny spot with 8 or more hours of sunlight a day. Often seen growing on the slopes in valleys for both the drainage and some daily shade.

Pruning – If necessary to prune Ocotillo whips, don’t do it halfway. Remove entire whip at base of plant.
